Bend, situated in the heart of Central Oregon, is a rapidly growing town of about 75,000 people, which still maintains many small community values that seem to draw people here to visit and then to stay. At an elevation of 3600 feet, Bend is at the border between High Desert and the Cascade Mountains, which manage to block most of the precipitation that Western Oregon is known for. Total precipitation in Bend is from 12" to 15" per year, some of which falls as snow in the Winter months, then quickly melts away in the sunshine that graces the town about 300 days per year.
Not so at nearby Mt Bachelor, however, where the mountain captures over 300" of snow each Winter, providing world class downhill skiing and snowboarding from November into late Spring. It´s just a 25 minute drive from downtown Bend.Although Bend, OR attracts several retirees seeking an active lifestyle, the average age of newcomers is about 39 years. Jobs are plentiful and Bend is experiencing growth in some of the high tech industries that have long since replaced the lumber industry that once begat this town on the Bend in the Deschutes River for which it is named.
Real Estate in Bend has grown extremely rapidly in recent years, causing an increase in new home developments and a rapid rise in Bend home prices. But to newcomers from areas like California and Washington, prices of Bend Real Estate appear to be a bargain, and so the continued increase in population. It´s hard to match the lifestyle to be found in this town anywhere else on the West Coast, certainly not at the prices of local real estate.
