Redmond is a High Desert city, at an elevation of 3077 feet. With an abundance of dry sunny days, it averages less than 9" of precipitation annually, with little snow, although it does provide varying weather through the seasons.
As the area was basically quite arid, construction of a canal in the early 1900´s bringing irrigation water to the area, followed by arrival of the railroad, initiated growth of the new town of Redmond. Today it is the fastest growing city in Oregon.
And, as featured in the MayJune 2007 issue of "Where to Retire" magazine, Redmond is one of the best towns in the USA to retire.
An airport in Redmond served as an Air Force Training Base during WW II and following the war became Roberts Field, which today offers direct commercial flights to Portland, Eugene, Seattle, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Las Vegas, Denver, and Salt Lake City.
Near the airport is the Deschutes County Fairgrounds and Expo Center, home to outdoor events such as the Fair and the Rodeo, and numerous indoor events throughout the year.
Redmond is just a 20 minute drive from Bend along Highway 97, and a 3 hour drive from Portland. Nearby Smith Rock is a landmark North of town and a popular challenge for rock climbers and hikers.
